To call sagebrush a sacred symbol of the west would be an understatement. The hearty evergreen unravels its silver-green carpet through the harshest deserts like a blanket, tucking in sandy earth to rest. Rich with cultural significance, she bears many uses…drink her leaves for tea, burn her wood for fuel, smudge her smoke for cleansing… and the list goes on.
When crushed, the three-toothed leaves give off their spicy, signature scent that reigns over the landscape. After a rare rain, the atmosphere swims in its perfume with deep revery. Artemisia tridentata tends to favor cold deserts, and where I lived in Taos, New Mexico, it reigned supreme, omnipresent, an expected part of every horizon, an old friend.
